Elaine’s Apple Herbed Thanksgiving Stuffing

Ingredients

  • 4 cups unseasoned bread cubes
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 cups diced Big Air Foods freeze-dried apples
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup diced celery (optional)
  • 1/2 cup diced carrots (optional)
  • 2 cups ground Italian sausage
  • Salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • ½ tablespoon chopped sage

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray; set aside.
  2. Combine the bread cubes, parsley, and apples in a large heat-resistant mixing bowl; set aside.
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions, celery, and carrots, optionally, season with salt and pepper, and continue to cook for 4 minutes or until tender. 
  4. Add ground sausage to the skillet and Cook until browned. Remove from heat. Add the chicken broth and chopped sage. 
  5. Add the skillet's contents to the bread cubes mixture; mix until thoroughly combined and evenly moist.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the baking dish and bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven and serve.
